9 questions to discover a marathon : In Flanders Fields-marathon

André Mingneau, the race director of “In Flanders Fields-marathon” is presenting the marathon he is in charge of.

Hello, on September 13th 2009, you’ll be organizing the In Flanders Fields-marathon . Can you tell us where it is located?

It’s in “Flanders”, which is the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. Our most famous city is Brussels, also known as the capital of Europe.

The race is running from Nieuwpoort to Ieper. Ieper, or Ypres, is very famous because of the battles of the First World War.

This will be the 10th edition of the race. Why was it created in the first place?

I created it in honour of my grandfather. He and his four brothers went all five to WW1, the farm of their parents was only a few miles from the Front line. All five came came back alive which was very unique!

What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it?

It’s a very flat race along the exact border of the front line of the First World War 1914-1918. It’s on a traffic free road from Nieuwpoort, by Diksmuide and with arrival on the historic market place of Ieper.

You really run between the fields with the cows as spectators…

How many runners do you expect on Sunday morning? What type of runners do you plan to attract?

Last year we have 450 arrivals, some of them are really race runners but most of them run for their own pleasure and because of the history of this place.

Do you organize other races during the Week-End? If so, on what distances?

There is also a 7 and a 14K in Ieper.

At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect?

Mostly Sunny, between 16 and 21 degrees, that’s the average

Have you planned festivities around the marathon?

No, but maybe there will be some animation in Ieper

The marathon finished, what advice would you give a runner who has never been to Nieuwpoort-stad or Ypres before? A good restaurant, a fancy sightseeing?

A restaurant in Ieper, there are a lot, and of course a sightseeing around the battlefields of “Flanders Fields”, there are so many military cemeteries and it’s surely worth a visit.

In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of 42k195 to make them register for the In Flanders Fields-marathon?

The “In Flanders Fields-marathon” may help to keep people’s mind open against useless violence and terror, that’s why our English, American and Canadian friends talk about the “marathon for peace”!

In ‘14-’18 the victory in World War One was more important than personal survival.
This time participation in the “In Flanders Fields-marathon” is more valuable than the first place in the race. Therefore, participate and run this attractive marathon.

Thank you André

8 questions to discover a marathon : Moray Marathon

Nicky Nash who has been the Secretary and Treasurer of the Moray Marathon Committee for the last 7 years has accepted this interview.

Hello, on September 13th 2009, you’ll be organizing the Moray Marathon. Can you tell us where it is located?

The Moray Marathon is held in the North East of Scotland along the Moray Firth coast.

This will be the 28th edition of the race. Why was it created in the first place?

It was created by the local community, to coincide with the start of local running clubs, in particular Elgin Athletics Club. Although it has developed into a 3-in-1 running event, it was initially just a marathon.

What kind of route have you set up for the runners? How would you describe it?

All 3 races follow the same clockwise circuit with the Marathon starting in Elgin, the Half Marathon in the spectacular grounds of Gordonstoun School, Duffus, and the 10k in Lossiemouth. The finishing line for each is Cooper Park, Elgin with the 13th Century Elgin Cathedral forming a dramatic backdrop.

Moray contains a great diversity of landscapes which includes sandy and rocky shores, rivers, lochs and mountainous areas. Most of these aspects have been incorporated into the Moray Marathons and 10k routes by taking the runners on tarred roads, passing through woodlands, coastal areas, towns and villages.

How many runners do you expect on Sunday morning? What type of runners do you plan to attract?

We usually have an entry field of 800 runners between the 3 races, including local, national, and even some international runners.

Do you organize other races during the Week-End? If so, on what distances?

We have two races beside the marathon : a half-marathon and a 10k race.

At that time of the year, what kind of weather can we expect?

Obviously in Scotland the weather can never be guaranteed! But we hope that the warm, friendly faces will always make up for any lack of sun.

Have you planned festivities around the marathon?

We offer a t-shirt and medal to all finishers, plus free drinks and refreshments to runners and their friends and families.

In a single sentence, what would you tell the readers of 42k195 to make them register for the Moray Marathon?

If you want to take part in a friendly race, and combine it with a tour of Scotland in the heart of malt whiskey country, then you need to come along to Moray. We look forward to meeting you.

Thank you Nicky

2009 Grand Canyon Marathon is cancelled

We have not been able to secure an actual date for the event with the National Park Service. As it has always been our primary goal to put on a high quality event we are choosing not to continue the process this year as we are running short on time to prepare. Grand Canyon National Park is a very special place which receives a lot of pressure from various groups to hold special events and the Grand Canyon Recreation Center only wants to support quality events that create a meaningful and positive association between our events and the Park. We apologize for not being able to provide this great event for 2009 and we look forward to trying again for 2010.
